Delta and Meredith Corp. Celebrate Designers of Tomorrow

July 22, 2011

Taylor, Mich. (July 22, 2011) - Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to innovation in design, Delta Faucet, a Masco company, partnered with Meredith Corporation, the nation's leading publisher of top-selling consumer magazines, to announce the 2011 winners of the second annual Designers of Tomorrow contest. The winners were three students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The winners' entries featured unique and functional designs using one or more Delta® products in a residential application outside of the kitchen and bathroom and stood out for their innovative design.

The students won academic scholarships totaling $10,000 from Meredith Corporation for their standout designs in the following categories: overall design, Readers' Choice, and Students' Choice. The students, along with photos of their winning designs, were showcased in the June 2011 issues of Better Homes & Gardens, Traditional Home, Ready Made, and Modern Living. They were also recognized at a private reception on June 13.

"The Designers of Tomorrow contest provides Delta Faucet with the opportunity to work with the next generation of designers," said Judd Lord, director of industrial design, Delta Faucet Company. "We hope the contest will inspire the students, pushing them to think of ways to create designs that utilize fixtures and water in an unconventional way."

Grand prize winner Alysse Filipek received a $5,000 scholarship and the Readers' Choice Winner, Jamie Sandy, and the Students' Choice Winner, Zhe Zhang, both received a $2,500 scholarship. The awards were presented to the winners by Steve Levinson, VP/group publisher, Meredith and Mary McCullough, channel manager, Delta Faucet Company, at the private reception.

Filipek's winning design, "Revive," is a lamp specifically intended to battle Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The design features the Delta Pilar® pull-down kitchen faucet paired with the Dryden showerhead to create the overall structure of the lamp.

Sandy's design, "Bamboo-Cero," received the Readers' Choice Award. The design showcases the Delta Vero® showerhead in a sculptural design of fountains located in a residential bamboo garden. The showerheads represent the leaves on the bamboo stems, which consist of metal piping.

The Students' Choice Winner, Zhang, created the "Umbrella Pot," inspired by the concept of using an umbrella-shaped figure as a flower pot. The upside-down umbrella pot incorporates a Delta faucet as the handle, which directly waters the flowers. The permeable fabric of the umbrella allows the water to flow in and out of the pot.

The judging panel for the Designers of Tomorrow Contest consisted of Susan Fredman, Susan Fredman Design Group; Martin Horner, Soucie Horner Ltd.; Kathy Manzella, de Giulio Kitchen Design; Missi Tate, Delta Faucet Company; Judd Lord, Delta Faucet Company; George Aye, School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Liz Armstrong, ReadyMade; Carol Schalla, Midwest Living; Amy Elbert, Traditional Home and Kit Selzer, Better Homes and Gardens.
